HandS Lab is a research and educational outreach laboratory

Human alongside AI.

We study human choice, attention, learning, creativity, and professional practice, including how working with AI changes them.

We build open knowledge, standards, and tools that expand human capabilities while preserving human autonomy and authorship.

AI should expand human capabilities and preserve human agency.

Human agency in working with AI

AI changes the pace of tasks, the way thoughts are formulated, decisions are made, learning happens, content is created, and help is sought.

You ask AI for a draft, and a minute later you are editing its opinion, not yours.

HandS Lab explores the possibilities of systems alongside the consequences of their presence in human experience. Does the person remain the author of the goal? Do they understand the limits of working with the system? Can they change direction, pause, or opt out?

Human Agency by Design is an approach in which human agency is built into the system’s architecture, usage rules, and distribution of responsibility.

Three areas of HandS Lab’s work

Research, educational outreach, and practical prototyping form a single cycle: we ask a question, try it in practice, open knowledge, and turn insights into educational formats, frameworks, and standards.

01

Research and open standards

We study agency, attention, thinking, learning, creativity, assistance, and professional responsibility, including how working with AI changes them.

We distinguish between assumptions, hypotheses, observations, and confirmed findings. We publish materials that can be verified, discussed, and refined.

02

Events and community

We host lectures, webinars, educational programs, and meetings about the practice of working with AI, its opportunities, limitations, and consequences for people, teams, and professional communities.

03

Projects and tools

We build prototypes and environments through which we try out hypotheses in specific situations where people work with AI.

Every project begins with a research question. We describe its scenario, status, system role, and human involvement in the process.

HandS Lab Principles

  1. 01

    Human as Author

Purpose, boundaries, and final decisions remain with the person. Their involvement is not reduced to confirming a pre-packaged system recommendation.

  2. 02

    Stronger Human Afterwards

Working with the system should leave the person with greater understanding, attentiveness, and agency in their own setting. We track what skills, questions, and action patterns a person carries away after working with the system.

  3. 03

    An Exit Always Exists

Work with the system can be paused, modified, or ended. Its boundaries, consequences, and available alternatives should be clear.

  4. 04

    AI Declares Its Role

The system states its own role before work begins, so the user knows where AI is operating, what it is doing, and what should not be expected of it. Its designers are accountable for the accuracy of that statement.

  5. 05

    Explicit Responsibility

Specific individuals and organizations are accountable for research, design, deployment, data handling, and addressing issues.

HandS Lab Events

HandS Lab develops educational formats for individuals, teams, and professional communities working with AI in learning, creativity, teamwork, and daily tasks.

At the core of these formats are practical questions: what is appropriate to delegate to the system, how to verify responses, how to keep one’s own writing style, and how to maintain understanding in the process of automation.

01

Webinars and open lectures

Meetings on agency, attention, learning, creativity, professional boundaries, and the ethics of care.

02

Educational programs

Sequential work on a specific issue: from personal habits to team collaboration, learning, or creative practice.

03

HandS Lab Community

A space for professional exchange, collaborative learning, and mindful exploration of one’s own experience alongside AI.

04

Library

Recordings, practical tools, and curated materials to revisit at your own pace.

Upcoming events

Preparing upcoming events. Leave your email address to receive the program once confirmed.

What is already open

We opened in October 2026. Here is what you can already read on the site.

What comes next

  1. 01

    First events

We are preparing the first webinars and lectures. The program will be announced once confirmed.

  2. 02

    First pilots

We are looking for partners with a question worth testing together. Scenario, boundaries, and data are agreed before work starts.

  3. 03

    More open materials

We add research notes, standards, and event recordings as they become ready.

Pilots and Collaboration

A pilot starts with a question important to both the partner and HandS Lab.

Together, we define the scenario, agree on roles, boundaries, and data management, conduct a targeted work cycle, and collect observations.

Pilot outcomes demonstrate what occurred under specific conditions: what supported the work, what needs refinement, and what next steps make sense.

Findings apply to the agreed conditions. Broader claims require further verification.

Get involved with HandS Lab

Four ways to join: bring your expertise, bring your organization, become a member, or fund the work.

01

For researchers and specialists

Contribute to methodology, evaluation, expert review, or joint publications.

02

For organizations, universities, and communities

Discuss an educational program, workflow research, or a focused pilot.

03

Membership

Join the organization as a member if you share its mission and want to take part in its work. Terms are set by the bylaws.

04

Support the Research

Independent research, open materials, and educational programs run on support. We state the purpose of every contribution up front and report on how it was used.

Notes from the Lab

Questions we test. Observations we refine. Decisions we adjust. Events and materials you can join.

No daily noise.
