Research and standards

We test assumptions about people and interaction with AI. We look at what a system can do and at how it changes decisions, attention, habits, learning, and the sense of authorship.

Research areas

  • how different forms of support affect learning;
  • how decisions and responsibility change in teams;
  • what supports a person’s own intention in creative work;
  • how technology takes part in making sense of personal experience;
  • which forms of interaction leave people able to understand and control the process.

Research material statuses

We distinguish different levels of maturity in research materials:

  1. 01conceptual assumption
  2. 02research hypothesis
  3. 03protocol
  4. 04pilot observation
  5. 05preliminary analysis
  6. 06completed report
  7. 07externally peer-reviewed publication.

Not all materials pass through every stage. We state the status of each material separately.

The status of a material describes the maturity of research knowledge. A project status in the catalog describes the stage of a tool or experimental environment. These are different scales: one concerns what we know; the other concerns the stage a project has reached.

Ethics, standards, and practice

For HandS Lab, ethical principles must be connected to concrete decisions: how roles are defined, how people give consent, what data are needed, who can see results, and how errors or undesirable consequences are addressed.

We publish materials on standards and ethics of care as they become ready for publication. In each case, we state the status, scope of application, and known limitations.

Research collaboration

We are open to research and methodological collaboration. If your work relates to human experience in interaction with AI, tell us about the question you would like to explore.
